The 1200 sq ft two-story apartment takes its name from a modest private garden. The design of the interior is driven by views of the surrounding garden. The integrated dining cove and central living space align with the reflecting pool and the park treetops beyond the private garden wall. A Frangipani tree, pool, and Bardiglio marble fountain were deliberately raised from the ground to be seen from the deepest parts of the living room.
A collection of mid-century furniture pieces were another point of departure in the design process. Modern classics by Jeanneret, Eames and Marcel Breuer were selected for their tactile materiality and bold geometries. Custom solid Ash wood millwork complement the loose furniture throughout. The wall shelves, benches, desk, wardrobes, and bed sets are all made by local artisans using traditional woodworking techniques. Rattan elements applied with minimal edge detailing distinguishes the master bedroom suite. The occupants of the house include a pair of British shorthair cats, who enjoy a bookshelf that doubles as a climbing space. A wine cellar and sauna round out the home amenities.
