Xiguan House is a reconstruction of a century-old rowhouse in the historic Xiguan neighbourhood of Guangzhou, China. Like a house within a house, a new steel structure sits within the retained brick enclosing walls. Aspects of the original interior, including period stained glass screens and tiles, were salvaged and reincorporated into the new construction. Living areas are organized around new lightwells that draw natural light and ventilation into the deep site. Construction was undertaken by neighbours and the process was featured in the documentary Memories of Canton and aired on CCTV in 2019.
